A New Zealand and Christchurch response perspective.

As one who has been involved in recent responses to major emergencies I completely endorse the statements in Paul's last paragraph.

It is essential that the responding resources are coordinated and managed.

Here in Christchurch we have had teams and individuals arrive independently for research purposes only to be made aware that we are busy responding and coping as we move to maintain and then restore services. These independents have left thinking that they have been the subject of professional jealousies and have made enemies, not so, they were just distractions that we don't need at this time. The same applies to unsolicited medical/health teams.

We have support in place for earthquake anxiety and are prepared to move to more in-depth support. We appreciate all offers of help and will certainly call upon them if WE need.

From here our thoughts are with our colleagues in Japan.

Sincerely

Graeme McColl
